IGNITING THE JOY OF LEARNING   – THE SIXTH ELEMENT

In times of rapid change – igniting the joy of learning – is  most critical,  for every child, as they get ready to become citizens of tomorrow-  a FUTURE where all of us will need to continuously learn, uplearn, relearn,  as a life long skill, to stay relevant .

we call this “the sixth element” – which is the genesis & foundational cornerstone of our school lets discuss some of this

We are living in rapidly changing times. With new technologies, innovation, operating models, paradigms, geo-political, social, demographic shifts & volatility abounding – sometimes described as VUCA times. At times it seems, as if there is so much change & bewildering volatility around us, that it can be overwhelming for us, which researchers and experts say may continue in future. if we adults sometimes struggle, and get overwhelmed, imagine what it will be for our dear children

Its therefore worth reflecting – on what’s very important for educating & nurturing our children, so as to get them ready for the future.

lets firstly appreciate that “learning” is a natural instinct, just like many of our natural urges like breathing, eating, etc. The innate desire to learn, understand, discover, learn new capabilities, skills, simply needs to be catalysed & nurtured, by great teachers, the right curriculum, cutting edge new age teaching methodologies and environment, so “learning & discovery becomes a joy” and children just look forward to going to school.

Children are faster learners, generally flexible and can adapt, but the environment around them, what they see, hear and do, becomes a catalyst for creative and all round development, especially in the foundational years (pre-primary & primary grades). So the school’s curriculum, implementation strategies & processes that develop children needs to be carefully structured, internationally benchmarked, quality of operations & processes evolved and well implemented – as all this enables. And gets further strengthened if supplemented by parents when they drop & pick up children, as well as @ home. Values , such are courtesy for example, can  get better absorbed by the child, if they see courteous behaviour reinforced all round, including at home.

Our school’s internationally benchmarked learning curriculum – “like in most developed countries” – recognises that the first early & primary grade years upto the age of 12 life especially, is foundational for lifelong well-being, overall growth and development across all dimensions – physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional – and for developing the sixth element – the joy of learning !

Humans naturally want to learn. Such natural desires & instinct have enabled our species to evolve and thrive. It’s also key reason – why we adults like to browse on information sites like google or other platforms to browse & learn. So all that a good school needs to do is catalyse & encourage this instinct – so children look forward to more and more learning – which eventually becomes a core foundational skill & capability of the child – absolutely critical for the future.

Learning is not a static body of knowledge – rather it’s a skill and capability – and most quality modern/contemporary global future ready school curriculums inherently recognise this . From early years to later years of our lives we are constantly engaging & interacting with stimuli from the environment, our accumulated knowledge and experiences, as well as our internal stimuli – i.e emotions, intuition, and our own creative and logical thinking. These many and varied stimuli help us form associations, add knowledge & abilities to the file cabinets & processes in our heads, strengthen neural pathways, emotional & cognitive abilities, develop new insights, &   new/novel ideas, and to grow, evolve and improve

Humans are naturally inclined to learn (Brown & Dryden, 2004; DeCarvalho, 1991; Holt, 1983; Rogers, 1961). We want to find out about the world around us.  human brains are naturally hardwired to acquire knowledge. We are curious creatures who try to make sense of the world that confronts us. Put a human in a room with a box and sooner or later that human will look into the box in order to see what is there. So this natural inclination has helped our species evolve from early times.

All children, actually all humans will learn if the learning material is interesting or presented in interesting ways (DeCarvalho, 1991; Rogers & Freiberg, 1994). Material to be learned can be made interesting by linking new information to learner’s needs or personal interests or by presenting the learning material in a way that is compelling or interesting (like a story or a project/activity).  subjects that are “perceived” to be too abstract, irrelevant, or meaningless are harder to learn.

Human learning is cyclical not linear (Bruner, 1977). Humans learn things by revisiting them many times at successively higher levels. Humans do not learn like computers. With a computer, you input the information once and it is learned as fully and completely as your input. With humans you cannot present information just once and expect them to have learned it. Humans need to revisit skills and concepts several times and in different circumstances.  With each visit we learn at increasingly higher levels.

A warm, friendly , nurturing milieu helps, children to look forward to each day !

all of the above – therefore has tremendous implications for a school, driven to impact their children positively and to get our dear children ready for the future? What happens in a high quality school to quench this natural desire to learn is therefore an important question? Are we forcing children to learn – or are we allowing the sponge like brains of our children to enjoy learning, discovery and from integrate all the change & evolution around us into his/her abilities ? learning to differentiate right from wrong,  further strengthens these innate capabilities

THE SIXTH ELEMENT SCHOOL BELIEVES IN THE IMPORTANCE OF “THE SIXTH ELEMENT” FOR EVERY CHILD. OUR CURRICULAM IS  BENCHMARKED WITH THE BEST INTERNATIONALLY, WHILE DRAWING FROM OUR  CORE ANCIENT BEST PRACTICES. THANKS TO ITS 18 YEARS EXPERIENCE AND ITS CORE CHILD DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES DRAWN FROM PIAGET, VYGOSTKY AND BRUNER  – WHICH IS INCIDENTALLY THE RESOURCE POOL – FOR THE FOUNDATIONAL YEARS SCHOOL CURRICULUM OF THE UPGRADED NEW EDUCATION (NEP) UNDER ROLL OUT IN INDIA NOW.

Many parents ask us – about the original of our school name – the Sixth element – which in a nutshell is igniting the joy of learning !- so very important in the early & primary years – i.e. FOUNDATIONAL YEARS  (i.e upto age 12  – upto grade 5)  as once learning has become a joy, it becomes a life long habit in later years school, college & later in life

Many parents – ask us about the original of our school name – the Sixth Element ! – this piece will hopefully explain that the Sixth element is simply igniting the joy of learning !
